The Testing Protocol

How to test a sample properly.

  1. 01

    Spray on skin, not paper.

    Blotters tell you almost nothing about how a fragrance will actually wear on you. Skin is the only real test.

  2. 02

    Take notes at 30 minutes, 2 hours, and 6 hours.

    Track projection at each mark. A fragrance that dies in 90 minutes is a very different bottle than one that hums along all afternoon.

  3. 03

    Wear it a full day before you judge it.

    First impressions almost always change. Give the drydown time to reveal itself before you decide anything.

  4. 04

    Test it in the season you'll actually wear it.

    Heat pushes projection; cold flattens it. Cross-season testing is misleading — sample summer scents in summer.

  5. 05

    Log everything.

    Verdict, projection, longevity, weather, occasion. Otherwise you'll forget which sample made you feel invincible and which one you took off after twenty minutes.
